How is corona virus affecting the game of cricket?

The recent corona virus outbreak has stifled most of the countries in the world. The worldwide death toll has crossed the 10,000 mark, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared COVID19 as a pandemic. The outbreak has taken the world by a storm affecting livelihoods and economies.

Fantasy cricket

Corona virus has also affected the world of sports, with major global events getting canceled due to the outbreak. The online fantasy sports industry has also taken a significant hit due to the pandemic. From the cancellation of the Euro cup to playing NBA games behind closed doors, the world of sports has been hit badly. Not to leave cricket behind where respective boards and ICC have canceled all the bilateral series that were supposed to take place in the month of March.

Global T20 leagues canceled

IPL has been postponed till 15th April. The knock out stage of PSL was also called off. Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, also made it clear that if at all the IPL happens, it will be a truncated one. Though the league has not been officially called off but looking at the number of coronavirus cases in the country, hosting IPL this season will not be a wise idea. With coronavirus leaving its mark in most of the European countries, the chances of ECB hosting the inaugural ‘The Hundred’ tournament too looks quite bleak at the moment.

Future of World Test Championship (WTC) in doubt

Two test series (England v/s Sri Lanka & Pakistan v/s Bangladesh) of the world test championship have already been called off. As a result, the ICC needs to reschedule these matches once conditions are favorable for playing. With the international calendar already fixed for the year, it will be an uphill task for ICC to find a suitable window for all the matches that have been postponed or called off. The WTC final is scheduled for June 2021 in Lords, and by that time, ICC has to ensure an equal number of series for all the eight nations involved in the WTC.

Future of World T20 2020

The world T20 is scheduled for the months of October-November in Australia. If the situation does not improve by that time, there is a possibility that the world T20 might also get rescheduled. Soon, ICC will have to take a tough call to go ahead with the world T20 or to schedule the games that have been called off during that window.

In the meantime, when the entire world has come to a halt, we at Apne11 urge our fans to stay safe and take adequate precautions during this tough phase.
