With less than eight months to go for the T20 world cup, players were looking forward to the IPL 2020 as a breeding ground just before the mega event. Not only players, but fantasy cricket fans were also looking forward to earn some cash by being a part of the IPL 2020 fantasy league. Over the years, the Indian Premier League has become the litmus test for every player to get into the national side. Not only the Indian selectors but other cricket boards treat IPL performances at par with international standards and have set the IPL as a gateway to the national side. Amid the coronavirus outbreak in the country, BCCI was forced to postpone the tournament till 15th April. But, looking at the positive cases which are increasing daily chances of IPL 2020 happening this year seems very slim.
Let’s look at three Indian players who were looking forward to IPL 2020 to earn a national call up in the T20 world cup squad –
It will be heartbreak and an emotional loss for all MS Dhoni fans if the IPL 2020 is canceled. Moreover, the suspense around his non-availability in the limited-over squad post-world cup has created much curiosity over his international career. Even Ravi Shastri and the current chairman of selectors, Sunil Joshi, made it very clear the importance of IPL if Dhoni wants to get back in the mix. However, with KL Rahul becoming the first choice wicket-keeper for limited over cricket and Pant being getting the backing of the selectors since world cup, Dhoni might find it challenging to make a case for himself. Ashwin played his last limited over the game for India in June 2017. Since then, he has been out of sight of the selectors when it comes to white-ball cricket. Of late, the success of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav has made it tough for finger spinners like Ashwin to make a comeback to the national side. Though Ashwin hasn’t called it quits from white-ball cricket but has added many variations to his repertoire. He would have eagerly waited for the IPL to make a statement for himself.
After an impressive start to his international career in 2018, Krunal Pandya was the first-choice spinning all-rounder for the team. But with the comeback of Jadeja and Washington Sundar, it has not been very easy for Pandya to find a spot in the team. Pandya has been an important cog in the wheel for the Mumbai Indians and most likely would have played the majority of the games. A good IPL 2020 could have given him a chance to make the cut for the World Cup squad.
Most likely, the IPL 2020 might get canceled, and Indian selectors have to rely on the international fixtures to come up with the World T20 squad. With a good bench strength that India has created for them, the selectors will have a tough time naming the team. IPL 2020
